§ 2-363.3. Additional assessment for electronic summons system.

  • Beginning on April 1, 2020, and continuing thereafter until changed by city council, there is hereby assessed pursuant to the provisions of Section 17.1-279.1 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended, as part of the costs in each criminal or traffic case filed in the district courts or circuit courts of the City of Lynchburg, in which the defendant is charged and convicted with a violation of any statute or ordinance, an additional sum of $5.00, which assessments are to be used solely to fund software, hardware, and associated equipment costs for the implementation and maintenance of an electronic summons system.

    The assessments shall be collected by the clerks of the respective courts in which the criminal and traffic cases are filed, shall be remitted to the city's finance department, and shall be held by the finance department until appropriated by the city council for disbursement to the city's law-enforcement agencies for the purposes set forth in this section.
